IT in the D, Networking Event in Two Weeks, Jobs and Updates for 11/1/2012

Well, this has been an interesting week, huh?

I’m not going to say that we upset the balance of the universe by the three of us getting together this past Saturday to actually start seriously planning the “IT in the D” conference in March, but let’s take a look at what’s happened since then:

– The entire East Coast gets hit by a hurricane, triggering flooding, blizzards, and damage of near biblical proportions.

– The NHL is about to announce the cancellation of the Winter Classic that was to be here in Detroit due to the ongoing lockout.

Disney buys Lucasfilm, taking over Star Wars.

Ummmm…we’re sorry?

You can give us hell about it at our event in two weeks

Thursday, November 15th. Royal Oak. BlackFinn. Back room. 5:01pm start time.

Details are available on our sitehttp://www.ITinTheD.com/meet/ or on LinkedIn at http://linkd.in/P0qmZl. Naturally, you can also find info out on our Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/ITintheD) page, Meetup (http://meetup.ITinTheD.org) group, or any of our other “presence” pages or event listings around the web…but we always recommend sticking with our site as your primary resource, just to be 100% safe.

Also out on our site, an oldie but goody bubbled back up: Crazy Dave’s House of Deals over at http://www.ITinTheD.com/217/crazy-daves-house-of-deals/ if you want to read about disingenuous people in the networking world.

So…that whole Sandy thing turned out to be pretty major, huh?

For the longest time, I was an East Coast kid.  Northern Virginia, Washington D.C., New England…all places I called “home” over the years before moving out here to Michigan in 1996.  I’ve still got family and friends back East, as do Jeff and his family.

Needless to say, our thoughts and well wishes are with those who have been impacted by this series of events.

There are many ways that you can donate to help out.  The easiest way is to simply Text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 to Disaster Relief efforts, but you can also find other ways to get involved here: http://www.redcross.org/support/donating-fundraising/donations  We strongly encourage you to do anything and everything you can to help out.  Even though we’re all about the metro Detroit area, that doesn’t mean that we’re heartless jackals who don’t worry about our fellow Americans no matter where they are.

I’ve got a bad feeling about this…

The geek world went into a rabid-mouthed frenzy as the announcement came out that Disney bought Lucasfilm.  Which meant they bought Star Wars.  Now, given the whole Star Tours thing, and the heavy LFL presence at Disney parks…this really doesn’t come as all that much of a surprise, I suppose…

…but still.  Wow.

So, I guess we’ll all see each other at midnight of opening night for Episode 7 in 2015.

Because let’s not pretend for even a moment that even the most foaming-mouthed critics over this aren’t going to be there.

And yeah, the NHL is doomed.  The Winter Classic in Detroit…all but dead.  The All-Star Game right down the road in Columbus a month later?  Fuhgeddaboudit.

[sigh]

Good thing we’ve got “IT in the D” brewing to keep my mind off of things like that, huh?

The plans for March 13, 2013 are well underway.

In the coming days, expect to see:

– Early bird registration go live.

– A call for speakers get announced.

– Perhaps most importantly…a call for volunteers who want to help will go live.

We’re really excited that this is actually coming together, and we hope you are as well.  Look for updates to be announced as we get a few last details wrapped up.

While you’re waiting on that, don’t forget about our LinkedIn group – http://www.linkedin.com/groups?home=&gid=91763, where we’ve got conversations like this taking place:

– The new MiTalent.org website apparently doesn’t want you to find unemployed candidates if you’re a recruiting or staffing company.  Wait, what!? http://lnkd.in/E2bjBB

– Two more hires come in from ou casual networking events for information technology professionals here in metro Detroit courtesy of the fine folks at iTalent: http://lnkd.in/HdgCAk

– The virtual office…workable? http://lnkd.in/gQX8Wr

…and more.

Naturally, there are also jobs posted in the group over at http://www.linkedin.com/groups?careerDiscussion=&gid=91763

Everything from .NET developers to DBAs, from analysts to architects…there’s quite a bit posted in there at the moment.  So, if you’re event casually looking, take a look in at http://www.linkedin.com/groups?careerDiscussion=&gid=91763 and see what’s out there.

Let’s keep this short and sweet this time around.

Regards,

Bob, Dave and Jeff
