Casual Networking Event in Two Weeks, News, Jobs and Updates for 10/3/2012

Well, here we are.

Officially October.

We’re two weeks away from our next casual networking event for metro Detroit information technology professionals.  We’ve got some reading material for you.  Our LinkedIn group is pleasantly active.  There are plenty of jobs out there to be had if you’re looking.  There’s a cool event taking place this weekend for WordPress users and developers.  A pub crawl, party bus, and all around good time taking place later this month.

All good things…so let’s get to some details…

As always we start with our next upcoming event.

Our next casual networking event for information technology professionals here in metro Detroit will be on Thursday, October 18th, and it will take place at Tipsy McStaggers in Warren.

5:01pm start time. Decent little place, locally owned and operated, and it’s good to get back there.

Details are available on our site: http://www.ITinTheD.com/meet/ or on LinkedIn http://linkd.in/P0pRyr, Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/ITintheD), Meetup (http://meetup.ITinTheD.org), or any of our other “presence” pages or event listings around the web.

Looking forward to seeing you all there, and they’re excited to have us coming back as well.

You know what else is kind of exciting? The Great Halloween Pub Crawl of 2012. Remember how I mentioned that I’m going to be doing about one of those per month? Well, here’s the one for October – http://www.thedetroitfunnies.com/index.php/2012/09/the-great-halloween-pub-crawl-of-2012/ – so get the babysitters lined up, and let’s do this.  Early Bird pricing ends Friday.

Wordcamp Detroit 2012 takes place this Saturday downtown at the Madison building.  This is a good way for developers and users of WordPress to dive in, get some great information, and meet some people along the way.  Details can be found out at http://2012.detroit.wordcamp.org/

Looking for some reading material?

Check out our three entries on How Not To Suck At Interviewing for a Job.  You can find Part 1 at http://www.ITinTheD.com/3078/how-not-to-suck-at-interviewing-for-a-job-part-i/, Part 2 at http://www.ITinTheD.com/3086/how-not-to-suck-at-interviewing-for-a-job-part-ii/, and Part 3 over at http://www.ITinTheD.com/3159/how-not-to-suck-at-interviewing-for-a-job-part-3/.

For the sake of all that’s good and decent in the world, Stop Twittering Yourself!  You can read what that means and how annoying it is out at http://www.ITinTheD.com/691/dont-be-that-guy-stop-twittering-yourself/

The topic of resumes keeps coming up, and so we encourage you to read Bad Resume Guy at http://www.ITinTheD.com/101/bad-resume-guy/ and the sequel, Bad Resume Guy 2: Is It Me You’re Looking For? over at http://www.ITinTheD.com/3576/bad-resume-guy-2-is-it-me-youre-looking-for/

…and those are just a few things that can be found by clicking around our blog, so by all means, go start reading: http://www.ITinTheD.com/blog/

Do you keep up with us on Facebook?

If not, you’re missing some funny stuff.  Or at least stuff we think is funny…and really, that’s what matters most.

Because yes, that image over there is funny.  But some of the comments that came after were far better.

So check us out at http://www.facebook.com/ITintheD

Now…what’s going on in our LinkedIn group?  Quite a bit, actually.  You can find it over at http://www.linkedin.com/groups?home=&gid=91763, and here are a few of the discussions underway:

– What gets asked during an exit interview? http://lnkd.in/QanDNV

– Linkedin wants to be Facebook, and also wants you to start blogging.  On Linkedin, naturally. http://lnkd.in/GZMrZH

– People are dumb. http://lnkd.in/jekt_j

– Iowa State University is opening a security lab, sounds like a cool idea. http://lnkd.in/Yxr7uh

– Are the new LinkedIn mini-endorsements for skills useful, or just annoying? http://lnkd.in/TpNQkr

– Wanna hit an event in Ann Arbor next week? http://lnkd.in/CTjhrj

– The dreaded resume gap. http://lnkd.in/HyQ7SW

– People actually get hired via our events.  Weird. http://lnkd.in/-_eHxX

…all that and more, so hop on over to http://www.linkedin.com/groups?home=&gid=91763 and dive in.

What, jobs?  Yeah, there are jobs.

On that front, I’ve had recruiters reach out to me directly for positions including WordPress contributors (you can write web copy, and know enough HTML to be dangerous), Linux workstation admins, and a few companies are also looking for recruiters to add to their teams.  If you fit the bill for any of those, drop me a note and I’m more than happy to arrange introductions for you.

That being said, let’s see what else is out at http://www.linkedin.com/groups?careerDiscussion=&gid=91763 right now.

Let’s see…checklist.

I covered our next casual networking event, Wordcamp 2012, the Halloween Pub Crawl and Party Bus, blog entries, discussions in the LinkedIn group, jobs in the LinkedIn group…

One last thing.  I don’t care what your political affiliation is.  I don’t care if you swing to the left or right.  I don’t care who you have stickers for on your car.

Watch the debates.  Be informed.  Keep your eyes and ears open, and your mouth shut for the duration.  Absorb information…and be informed.  More people vote during American Idol than during our Presidential elections, and that’s a sickening statistic.

Be informed.  And then vote.

I think we’re done here.

Regards,

Bob, Dave and Jeff
