ITintheD.org News, Updates, Jobs, Events and More for 8/31/2011

How in the hell is it already Labor Day weekend?  No really, seriously – how is that even possible?!  I used to laugh when my grandfather told me that time went faster as you get older…

…I’m not laughing any more.

Whether we’re all ready for it or not…Fall is nearly upon us as Summer draws to a close, and it’s almost time to start thinking about leaf rakes and snowblowers instead of backyard grills and lawnmowers.  The leaves will soon start to change, it’ll stay darker a little longer in the morning and the sun will go down a little earlier each night, and if you’re an early riser you’ve probably already noticed a bit of a chill in the morning air.

Good thing we’ve got a bunch of stuff going on between now and the end of the year to keep your mind off of trying to remember how many bags of salt you have left over from last winter…

We’re just two weeks away from our next Pink Slip Party event, taking place on Thursday, September 15th at the Post Bar in Novi.  You can check out the details here on our site at http://www.ITinTheD.com/event/sept-detroit-networking-pink-slip-party/ or out on LinkedIn at http://events.linkedin.com/ITintheD-org-PINK-SLIP-PARTY/pub/727777  Please remember to check out our Frequently Asked Questions out at http://www.ITinTheD.com/meet/faq/ if this is your first time coming…and now’s a good time to start letting us know you’ll be there, particularly if you’re a recruiter.  We’ve already heard from some of you, and remember – just like with all of our events, this one is completely free of charge to attend for job seekers, recruiters, and anyone else in and around the Information Technology industry that wants to attend.  The only reason we ask that you let us know in advance that you’re coming is so that if you’re a job seeker, we can help you out by getting your resume out to the recruiters that we know are coming, and for recruiters, we just want to make sure we have a badge waiting for you when you get there…as well as being able to get you in the mix with the job seekers that are coming.

After that, we’ve got The Great ITintheD.com Party Bus Tour (and Casual Networking Event) taking place on Thursday, October 6th starting out over at the BlackFinn in Royal Oak.  Then on October 20th we’ve got our October Casual Networking Social over at Dragonmead Microbrewery, followed by our first event in Flint on November 9th with Kettering University and Tech Works, and then our November Casual Networking Social over at the BlackFinn on November 17th.  As always, keep an eye on our events page out at http://www.ITinTheD.com/meet/ for details on upcoming events.

In case you missed the latest from the Don’t Be That Guy department, we have Don’t Be That Guy – Distracted Guy and Don’t Be That Guy – The MBA Candidate that have gone live recently, and we’re getting some cool feedback about both of them. Distracted Guy deals with Bob’s latest pet peeve (as well as a way you can bug him) and annoyance from the World of Sales, while The MBA Candidate dives into what can be the worst kind of candidate for a recruiter. You can read Distracted Guy out at http://www.ITinTheD.com/2253/dont-be-that-guy-distracted-guy/ and The MBA Candidate out at http://www.ITinTheD.com/2264/dont-be-that-guy-the-mba-candidate/

When you’re done with all of that, we’ve got our LinkedIn group over at http://www.linkedin.com/groups/ITintheDorg-Detroit-Networking-Events-IT-91763 to pay attention to, which currently has active discussions about handling interview questions that just aren’t supposed to be asked, what seems to be a never-ending discussion about remote employment and working from home, workers that have either given up on the US job market completely and moved overseas…or have at least given up on landing a full time gig and moved to freelance or multiple part time jobs, and a whole lot more.  It’s a good idea to check in there ona  regular basis not just for the jobs that get posted (and we’ll get to those in a moment), but also for the interaction that comes along with being a member of a group with (and this is still crazy to us) nearly 2700 members.

Now, on the topic of jobs…yep, there are quite a few active out there right now if you’re in the market.  Here’s a look at some of what’s live at the moment:
