Networking Event Next Week – News, That Guy, Jobs and Updates for 7/13/2011

We’ve got our next metro Detroit networking event taking place next Thursday, there are discussions and jobs sitting in our LinkedIn group, and there’s another Don’t Be That Guy out there.

Yep, that’s right…another Don’t Be That Guy is live.  We swear…it’s not our fault.  We’re the victims here.  They keep showing up, wildly waving their hands and demanding to be written about…and they won’t go away until something’s live.  So it’s live.

Now let’s dig in and get started…

July’s networking event will take place next Thursday, (that’s the 21st) and will be in the back room at the BlackFinn in Royal Oak. As always, you can find the details out on our Events page at or on LinkedIn at  It’s a 5:01 start time, so show up right after work, and we look forward to seeing you there!

Shortly after Don’t Be That Guy – More Human Than Human went live out at, a new chain of events unfolded that has led to Don’t Be That Guy – One Page Resume Guy, now live out at as a cautionary tale based on the bad experience of one of our members at a job interview.  It wasn’t pretty.

As I mentioned up above, there are some cool discussions going on in our LinkedIn group, as well as quite a few job postings.  We’re just about to hit 2600 members in the group (and so the old school geek in me is delighted) and there aren’t too many places you can go that have that many people tapped in strictly from the metro Detroit Information Technology industry.  If you’re relatively new to these parts, you might want to take a minute to read through the About Us page out at so that you can get a feel for who we are, what we’re all about…and, most importantly, who we’re not and what we’re absolutely not about.

Speaking of what we’re all about…we’re all about networking.  In order for networking to take place, you have to know people.  In order to get to know people, you have to show up at our events.  I mean, sure, the LinkedIn group is great and all, and emails and phone calls are nice, but you really don’t make connections that way.  You make connections by meeting people face to face, having a conversation with them (even just a brief one) and then following up to nurture and grow that relationship.  Someone who’s been really good at that with us is Russ Dotson, a technical recruiter with Qualified Business Solutions…sorry, a senior technical recruiter with Qualified Business Solutions.  In addition to showing up at our events (which, if you listen to his version of things, takes six hours, four transfers, and the last leg of the journey takes place by camel to get to them) to chat with people and helping folks out with a career push now and then, Russ has also written Don’t Be That Guy – The Bad Candidate out at and Don’t Be That Guy – The Recruiter Strikes Back 3 out at for us, providing some good advice for job seekers out there.  Russ is typically looking for seasoned (“experienced”…he doesn’t want to cook you.  at least not as far as we know…) developers and other resources, so if you want to chat with him, just find the guy with the lingering military haircut wearing cargo pants (it’s a safe bet) at one of our events and introduce yourself.

While you’re there in our LinkedIn group, don’t forget to hop into the Jobs tab and then hit Career Discussions to get into the gigs that people are posting.  Some of them out there at the moment are…
