Tonight’s episode got renumbered due to a really cool thing that happened yesterday off the cuff, so we’ll be doing episode 153 tonight with Jena Irene Asciutto from American Idol and Vittoria Katanski from Hatch Detroit. And with any luck, what turned out to be episode 152 will be live before we get rolling tonight, because it’s a conversation that definitely needed to happen, needs to continue, and needs to be heard. We’ve also got our event next week at Firebird Tavern, some blog entries for you to read, and all of the usual fun you’ve come to expect to us as we dive back into a full week…
As always, we start with our next upcoming in-person networking event. On Thursday, July 21 we’ll be upstairs at Firebird Tavern downtown. Great place, and we’ve loved the events we’ve done there thus far, and can’t wait for everyone to come out for another one.
Details for that event…and all of the others we do…can be found here on the site – http://www.itinthed.com/meet/, on our Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/ITinTheD, or in our Meetup group – http://www.meetup.com/ITintheD/
Looking forward to seeing everyone there.
We’ve also scheduled round 2 of our Metro Detroit Podcasters Meetup.
As you’re no doubt aware, we run the Podcast Detroit network, and we were asked why we weren’t doing meetups for podcasters like we do for the IT industry, and so we decided to give it a shot. The first one was an overwhelming success, so if you’re into podcasting, wanting to start a show, already running a show at home, in a studio, or anywhere else, we’d love to have you come out and join us for some drinks, video games, and good conversations. Details can be found at https://www.facebook.com/events/250075142044597/
And don’t forget, our next Pink Slip Party event is just around the corner. These are significantly larger than our monthly casual events and have seen over 1,000 people show up. We started accepting sponsors for these a few years ago when we had to move to larger venues downtown in order to handle the crowds that showed up, but we still deliberately limit participation to four companies just to cover the costs. Our sponsors are the only ones with a table and larger presence at the event, and over the years, it seems to work out well for them. Drop us a note and let’s talk about getting you setup: http://www.itinthed.com/contact-us/
Originally, this was slated to be episode 152…but then the events of last week happened, and rather rapidly, we were lucky enough to get Eric Thomas, Calvin Moore, Billy Strawter, and Khary Frazier in-studio to talk about not just the events of the past week, but also the touchy topic of what it’s actually like to be black in America today, as well as an amazing amount of historical reference and discussion about how we got here as a society.
It was, quite simply, an amazing afternoon. It was a long afternoon…we were in-studio for four and a half hours recording. We’re finishing up the files and getting them ready for publication…look for those later this afternoon. So much great information, conversations, emotions…we couldn’t be happier that this got pulled together, and we’re looking forward to doing more of these sessions in the future.
But for tonight’s episode, we’ve got Jena Irene Asciutto, a local girl who became the runner up on American Idol, and we’re looking forward to learning more about how that whole process worked, hearing her thoughts on the local music scene vs the national music scene and more. We’re also being joined by repeat guest Vittoria Katanski, which must mean that it’s the time of year again where Hatch Detroit is happening and local entrepreneurs can enter to get their hands on a bunch of cash, legal support, and much more for their ventures.
…as always, you should listen live to hear it all…and as we keep telling you, you’d do well to grab the Podcast Detroit app for Android or iOS and listen that way. You can find those apps here: http://www.podcastdetroit.com/how-to-listen/ The app was just recently updated to make finding out information about new shows, as well as catching show archives, a lot easier.
The mics go live starting at 9pm, and we hope you join us.
You can also catch any of our episodes you may have missed over at http://www.itinthed.com/listen/it-in-the-d-show-archives/, including last week’s with Seven Point Two Tours and Vault of Midnight at http://www.itinthed.com/18863/episode-150-seven-point-two-tours-and-vault-of-midnight-detroit/
Also on the podcast front, want to hear something fun? We kicked off “Worst Meatball Sandwich Ever”: Vegans who go to classy steak joints and whine about the lack of non-meat options. People who go to dive bars and are stunned they can’t get bottle service. Idiots who go to a brewery and are mad they can’t get a Bud Light. You know who they are…and so does the crew behind Worst Meatball Sandwich Ever Podcast, and they’re going to hold these special little snowflakes up to the harsh light of reality and hopefully have a few laughs along the way. We’re three episodes in now, and have covered people who don’t seem to understand the concepts of “Can’t miss places”, brew pubs, and slider joints. Give it a listen out at https://soundcloud.com/podcastdetroit/sets/worst-meatball-sandwich-ever. Episode 3 is now live as well, taking on those who clearly don’t understand what a slider is, or the places where you get them: https://soundcloud.com/podcastdetroit/worst-meatball-sandwich-ever-episode-3-slider-suckers
