Pink Slip Party Next Week! Updates and Jobs for 4/13/2011

Hey there!  Well, we’re a week away from next Thursday’s Pink Slip Party at the Post Bar in Novi, and things have really started to come together nicely.  We are, I think, successfully dipping our toes in the water of dealing with sponsors without compromising our core principles…and a big thank you to Dice.com for being so cool about all of our neurotic paranoia in doing it “our” way.  It’s nice that we can try to kick the events up a notch or two without having to sell out or charging people…because, well, at that point…it just wouldn’t happen.  We’re also looking forward to welcoming back the lawyers from the IT Section of the Michigan Bar Association to the event again – had a great time with them last year, and think it’ll be a good thing again.

We’ve got recruiters signing up…and quite a few new ones…or at least “new” from the standpoint that this will be their first Pink Slip Party event with us.

There are, of course, jobs galore in our LinkedIn group.

A few new blog entries went live.

So let’s go ahead and get started with everything that’s going on…Okay, so first thing’s first.  The Pink Slip Party next Thursday night.  Details can be found:

On our site: http://www.ITinTheD.com/meet/

On LinkedIn: http://events.linkedin.com/ITintheD-org-PINK-SLIP-PARTY/pub/509682

On Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/ITintheD

On Meetup: http://meetup.ITinTheD.org

On Eventful: http://eventful.com/novi/events/ITintheDorg-pink-slip-party-networking-metro-detroit-/E0-001-038272411-5

On Eventbrite: http://ITintheDworkingeventaprpinkslip.eventbrite.com/

(I swear to you right now…if anyone says “I can’t find what time the event starts” or “I don’t know where it’s at”, they’re banned…)

Now…we don’t ask much of you, we really don’t. But now I’m going to ask something of you. I would really appreciate it if:

  1. If you’re a job seeker planning on coming, get your resumes in to contact@ITinTheD.com
  2. If you’re a recruiter planning on coming, let me know ASAP, preferably no later than the end of this week…for reasons I’ll cover in a moment.
  3. Click on the Eventful link. Help make it a “most popular” event.
  4. Since we’re dealing with a sponsor…we’d like some tangible “before” numbers – please use Eventbrite and pick up “tickets”. Yes, “tickets” is in quotes – it’s still totally free to attend, we’d just like some idea of how many people are showing up so that we can plan effectively.

So go do that.  Humor me.

Now, many of you already know this…but on top of everything else that’s been going on recently, I just bought a new house this past Friday.  And I spent all weekend installing closet organizers and hauling and hurling stuff around…a task for which my Geek Physique is just simply not built for, honestly.  But it’s done.  The new place is still here in the metro Detroit area…just moving so that the kids are closer to their cousins and the rest of the family…so no worries, you’re not getting rid of me that easily.  But that’s a whole additional layer of chaos in my life on top of all of the usual “work is nuts, ITinTheD.org is crazy, life’s weird, kids are driving me batty, Bob’s convincing me to buy a bar, blah blah blah” stuff.  This move is why I’d really appreciate it if you recruiters out there can let me know by Friday if you’re coming to the event.  It’s going to be a major pain in the ass for me to try and get anything done next week with regards to badges and that sort of stuff…so please, again, humor me.

But do you think even THAT is all that’s going on?  Oh, hell no…of course not!  Why limit it there, right?  So why not go ahead and the day before I close on the new house…take some time and head over to Lawrence Tech to spend a good chunk of the afternoon talking with students about the importance of networking, how to approach it, what to expect, resumes and all of the questions that go along with them, internships…a whole host of topics got covered.  It was a ton of fun, and I really enjoyed it…and it also led to the writing of Don’t Be That Guy: The Unprepared Graduate.  Enjoy.

We also have The Recruiter Strikes Back, Volume 3 that just went live.  Another great read from a recruiter that comes to our events and hires people into jobs.  So, pay attention to it, folks.

Now, for you folks out there that will be coming to your first Pink Slip Party event, here’s some suggested reading material:
