Jobs, Upcoming Events, an Open House, New Grant Funding…Updates for 3/16/2011

Well, and here we go.  We’ve got updates, we’ve got jobs, there’s an open house taking place at the offices of one of our usual recruiter attendees, there’s some new grant funding that’s just been approved, we heard some good news for you web folks out there as some of our favorite recruiters got some press, we had a great event last week at the BlackFinn and have another one coming up next Wednesday at Hockeytown Cafe, followed by our second Pink Slip Party of the year on April 21st at the Post Bar in Novi…and a rumor of a possible quick addition somewhere in the middle there.

Whoever coined the phrase “No rest for the wicked” can jump off a cliff right about now.  Just sayin’.

So let’s just go ahead and get started, because obviously there’s not a whole lot of spare time right now…

First, if you haven’t seen it yet, check out the article that ran the other day on MLive.com that had some good news for web folks.  Granted, it’s nothing we haven’t been telling you all along…but it’s probably good to hear it from the people that are actually hiring people and putting people into jobs instead of just us prattling on day after day about how the market really has gotten better, and continues to improve.

One of the recruiting companies that’s in that article is Arrow Strategies, and they’re holding an open house on March 31st.  Now, the cut-off was 3/15…but they really just started getting the word out about it on Monday afternoon, and so I asked them to hold the RSVP list open for one more day so that you guys could get the email blast with the information in it and make it there if you wanted to go.  The details are:

Good Afternoon –

Please click the link below to view an invitation from Arrow Strategies. We will be having an open house/networking/spring event on March 31st.

There will be food, drinks, games and a raffle to win Tigers opening day tickets!

Please RSVP no later than 3/15.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

I look forward to seeing everyone there!

So, if you’re free on the 31st…I’d go.

Next up…new grant money.  Some of you who have been around for a while may remember an email blast that we did over a year ago when New Horizons had gotten their hands on the ability to get people approved for funding and get them through some certifications and training.  Well, even if you don’t…I guarantee you that Christy from New Horizons does, because I published a note like this at 11:30pm one night, and at 8:30 the next morning she called me asking me “What the hell did you do?!” because her inbox was completely flooded and her voicemail was full already.

Let’s shoot for a new record, shall we?

Just in from Christy Rowe over at New Horizons:

I just found out about another grant for FREE training! This is NOT No Worker Left Behind or TAA (although we still work with both).

It is a grant through the government for displaced workers who are specifically interested in taking IT training, PMP Project Management, or Lean Six Sigma.

The grant covers up to $5000 of training and there is also a time constraint to complete the training quickly.

They need to call me directly at: 734-853-2077 office or 734-968-4004 mobile and I will direct them on how to apply if they are planning on coming to EITHER the Livonia/Troy/Detroit offices of New Horizons, as I am running point on handling enrollments/grants for all locations.

This grant just came about a few weeks ago – and it will not be around for very long.

This may be a great alternative for individuals that may want to get some training, but may not have the means to afford it.

It is crucial that the group members act quickly in order to have an opportunity to apply.

The last time we sent out a posting like this, I ended up helping over 200 ITintheD.com members acquire FREE training grant money – and I would LOVE to do it again!! Please send this out to your distribution list

So, let’s go ahead and drive her nuts over the next day, shall we?  Excellent.

That brings us to next Wednesday (the 23rd), and our event at Hockeytown Cafe followed by a Red Wings game for those who have picked up tickets.  We’ll be up in the Rooftop Room starting at 5:00, and then hopping onto their shuttle to hit the game…and then presumably back again after the game.  Look forward to seeing you there!

How about some jobs?  Now that LinkedIn appears to have finished messing around with things…at least for the moment…when you click into the “jobs” tab within our group, hit the “Career Discussions” link that you’ll see at the bottom of the page and in the left-hand navigation in order to get to the jobs that are currently out there from the recruiters that participate in our group.  Here are a few of those jobs:
