Star Wars Day, Live Broadcast Tonight, Great Guests, Penguicon Recap and More for 5/4/2015

We have a LOT to get to, folks…so strap on your helmets and get ready for some fun.

We’ve got a live broadcast tonight for Star Wars Day with some awesome guests.  We have one of our in-person casual networking events taking place on Wednesday at a new downtown location that we can’t wait to get to.  We’ve got a bunch of blog entries for you.  We survived Penguicon and have our recaps published that you should read. There’s an announcement coming that we’re incredibly excited about, and oh…so, so much more…

kf3dbAs always, let’s kick things off with information about our next event.

We’re continuing the pattern of two events per month in May, and to start things off we’ll be upstairs in the Huma Room at Hopcat this Wednesday, May 6th at our usual starting time of 5pm.  You’ve heard the rumors, you may have even been there already – Hopcat’s a great place with a huge selection of beers as well as a full bar for those not in a beer mood.

10402048_533596270116217_6098493178557693299_nNo cover charge to get in, no sales pitches, no agendas, no nonsense.  Just good, solid opportunities to get to know some of the best and brightest folks in the metro Detroit information technology community.  Looking forward to seeing you there.

Details can be found here on the site – https://itinthed.com/meet/, on our Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/ITinTheD, or in our Meetup group – http://www.meetup.com/ITintheD/

11141205_556080377867806_5667067704523168203_nThat, among other things, will be discussed tonight during episode 90 of our weekly live broadcast.

We’re being joined by three lovely ladies strong in the Geek Side of the Force.  Erika Carlson is coming in to talk about self.conference.  Elyse Turner is joining so that we can grill her about making the transition from a Marketing role to a Developer position, because for everyone who says “that can’t be done”…guess what?  She did it.  And Kate Catlin is coming in to talk about all the fun she’s having these days with her various projects.

Plus it’s STAR WARS DAY, PEOPLE!  So yeah, The Dork Side will be strong this time around.

Mics go live at 9pm like always, and we’ve got clearly some great guests and conversations lined up.  So join us by listening live from 9pm to 11pm, and then hit us up by calling 313.462.0107 or firing up Twitter and hitting @ITintheD during the show.  We love audience participation, so come along and play with us!  Not sure how to listen live?  We’ve got instructions for you over here: https://itinthed.com/listen/how-to-listen/.  You can catch last week’s episode with Pure Storage, our Penguicon recap, and over an hour of content recorded live at Penguicon on Saturday night over at https://itinthed.com/17073/ep89-pure-storage-penguicon/

bobvennSpeaking of Penguicon, that takes us to our blog entries.

We’ve got a two-part review out on the site for you.  Part 1 is from Bob’s perspective as a sales guy hitting an event like this for the first time.  You can read his eye-opening experience at https://itinthed.com/17044/2015-penguicon-review-part-1-the-sales-guy-learns-something/

11175034_692394897537865_462485754779986214_nPart 2 is from Dave’s perspective as a geek who’s been away from events like this from far too long.  From running into long lost friends to an immense refresh and re-energizing of the batteries…go read it over at https://itinthed.com/17054/2015-penguicon-review-part-2-the-geek-goes-home/

Because it’s always good to take a look back now and then, Evolution is a fun read.  Written back in 2011, it’s kind of interesting to see what the group was at that point, what our thoughts were on where we were going to take things, and then look at that in the context of where we are today.

stoptwitteringStop Twittering Yourself is a good read, especially for those of you who make the fatal error of linking your various social media accounts together: https://itinthed.com/691/dont-be-that-guy-stop-twittering-yourself/

Did you know that if you post a job on our site, it gets blasted out to our 13,000+ Twitter followers?  It’s free, and you should check that out at https://itinthed.com/work/

That’s all for this time.  Don’t forget to listen live tonight from 9pm until 11pm for episode 90, and we’ll see you Wednesday night upstairs in the Huma Room at Hopcat!
