Free Training, News, Jobs and Updates for 3/27/2013

Whoa…it’s already almost April?

How the hell did that happen?

Well, let’s not dwell on that.  We’ve got free training that you need to know about, a couple blog entries you should read, our next casual networking social for professionals in and around the information technology industry is just a few weeks away, discussions and jobs from our LinkedIn group

…oh, and got word yesterday of the first hire taking place directly as a result of our Pink Slip Party back on 3/13/13.  Hashtag that, suckers…

Dsc03870Thursday, April 18th.

5:01 pm.

Royal Oak.

Blackfinn.

Back room.

Casual networking social event for professionals in and around the information technology industry in the metro Detroit area.

Details can be found here on our site at https://itinthed.com/event/april-2013-networking/, on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/ITintheD, or in our Meetup group at http://meetup.itinthed.com. Details on all of our upcoming events will always hit our site first, so you’ll want to pay attention to our events page at https://itinthed.com/our-events/. Anything late-breaking or last-minute will tend to be posted on our Facebook page (again – http://www.facebook.com/ITintheD) and on our twitter feed at http://www.twitter.com/ITintheD, so you might want to “like” and “follow” us on those platforms, respectively.

In last week’s update, I did a bit of a deep-dive to answer the “what’s the difference between a ‘casual networking event’ and a ‘Pink Slip Party’ question that was coming in.  I’m not going to rehash that all here – you’re grown ups.  You can click here if you’re wondering.

There_Was_A_FlyDon’t Be That Guy: The Fly is out at https://itinthed.com/4099/the-fly/, and it has two good rules of thumb to keep in mind while you’re attending networking events or just in general, so give it a read.

Sometimes the Cure is Worse than the Disease is over at https://itinthed.com/1684/dbtg-linkedin/, and yep, it’s actually a Don’t Be That Guy aimed at LinkedIn.  They keep making the whole “jobs” thing harder to get to and more confusing, so it was time to call attention to it.

Okay, okay…I know, I know…you’re here because you read “free training” and want to know more.  So let’s get to that.

The full details are sitting over at https://itinthed.com/5105/free-training-opportunities-available-again/, and it’s something that we really had a blast with back in 2009 – in case you missed the memo, we kind of like driving people nuts from time to time, and well, if we can manage to help people along the way…so much the better.  So give it a read, and see if you can manage to get yourself some free training!

So about our LinkedIn group.

As of this morning, we’re at 4,114 members.  All involved in some way, shape or form with the metro Detroit information technology industry.  For a niche (IT) within a niche (metro Detroit) that keeps kicking people out who suck, we think we’re doing pretty well.

The group lives at http://www.linkedin.com/groups?home=&gid=91763, and you can find some discussions like the following going on right now:

– The State of Michigan is doing a virtual jobs fair today: http://lnkd.in/WvQjRB

– Basic grammar and writing skills matter, people: http://lnkd.in/UmqgsA

– CVS, insurance, and health mandates by employers: http://lnkd.in/SUJ2-m

– Moving legacy apps to the cloud: http://lnkd.in/AYfyix

…and there’s more, but that’s a good enough starting point.

And jobs?  Yep, jobs.  You go into our LinkedIn group, you hit the “jobs” tab in our group (not in the top nav, in the group nav) and then you click “career discussions” in the left nav that loads.

See what I mean about them making it more confusing?

Sheesh.

You can also just click here: http://www.linkedin.com/groups?careerDiscussion=&gid=91763
