Casual Networking Event TONIGHT, a Pink Slip Party and More for 2/21/2013

Well that came together pretty quickly.

So we mentioned last week that IT in The D has been postponed until the Fall, but that we were working to pull something together to still keep everyone occupied.  In a frantic whirlwind of activity, we pulled together a Pink Slip Party taking place still on 3/13/13, and it’s going to get huge.  And hats off to  Bob for kicking some major ass to pull this together for us.  He must be trying to live up to that “Elite 40 under 40” thing or something…

BUT…that’s next month.  We’ve got our casual networking event tonight, a whole bunch of blog entries, another milestone and more to get into, so let’s dive in…

First thing’s first, our next event.

facebook_1432755027Thursday, February 21st (aka “TONIGHT!) at Falling Down Beer Company.

Yes, Falling Down Beer Company. Much like Tipsy McStaggers, I’m halfway convinced people are naming their bars specifically to get people like me intrigued and demanding to go there. Plus, it’s apparently owned by a couple of IT guys who got sick of being IT guys and so they opened a brewery.

If nothing else, it’s worth showing up just to watch Bob‘s head explode because someone is living his dream.

So that’s where we’ll be tonight for our casual networking event for metro Detroit information technology professionals.

We’re pretty sure it won’t break your heart. Except for Bob, of course.

Details, as always, can be found here on our sitehttps://itinthed.com/event/february-casual-networking-social-2012/ (yes, I know the year in the URL is wrong…shut up), out on Meetup: http://meetup.itinthed.com, and out on our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/ITintheD.

We’re looking forward to seeing you there.

So now let’s chat about next month.

It’s been a while since we’ve done our last Pink Slip Party event.  In fact, it will have been about nine months since our last one by the time March 13, 2013 rolls around…and from the ashes of the raging inferno that triggered the postponement of IT in The D until this Fall, the next Pink Slip Party rises.

And let’s be clear – this isn’t going to be just any old Pink Slip Party.  Nope, everyone’s stepping up their game here a little bit, including us.

We’re taking over St Andrews Hall downtown starting at 5pm.  Yep, our first Pink Slip Party downtown.  Yep, St Andrews Hall.

Yep, it’s gonna get big.

The good folks over at Arrow Strategies (http://www.arrowstrategies.com) and Brightwing (http://www.gobrightwing.com) are even taking a few extra steps themselves to make sure that this event goes over the top.

So do yourself a favor.  You can check out the details here on our site at https://itinthed.com/event/pink-slip-party-march-2013/, and you can read the story on CBS Local Detroit’s website about it here: http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2013/02/20/ITintheD-org-is-back-bigger-than-ever/

As always, keep yourself up to speed on all of our events out on our Events page at https://itinthed.com/our-events/

Blog entries.  This site wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for our collective need to spout off about things from time to time, so let’s see what we’ve got out here for you this week:

melThe New and Improved 10 Commandments of Networking bubbled up over at https://itinthed.com/2697/the-new-and-improved-10-commandments-of-networking/  If you’ve never read this one, you absolutely should, because it lays out the foundation of your success or failure not just at our events, but in many other circumstances day to day.

Don’t Be That Guy: The Angry Birds Edition is over at https://itinthed.com/3017/dont-be-that-guy-the-angry-birds-edition/, and let’s be real – I can find analogies in just about anything, and at least my obsession with these damnable games can come in handy for you from time to time.

man-shocked-looking-at-mobile-phone-oOne of my personal favorites (mostly because it keeps happening to me) is Don’t Be That Guy: The Booty Call Networker at https://itinthed.com/2415/dont-be-that-guy-the-booty-call-networker/

Unless you are 23 years old and have no experience whatsoever, Don’t Be That Guy: One Page Resume Guy is for you, so go read https://itinthed.com/2025/dont-be-that-guy-one-page-resume-guy/

And yes, our own Bob Waltenspiel made it into Oakland County’s “Elite 40 under 40“.  We were just as shocked as you are, but you can still read about it here: https://itinthed.com/4974/congratulations-bob-bob-waltenspiel-makes-the-oakland-county-elite-40-under-40/

Okay, so now let’s go ahead and hop into the LinkedIn group over at http://www.linkedin.com/groups?home=&gid=91763

li4000We hit a nice little milestone this week: 4,000 members in our Linkedin group.

For being a niche (people who don’t suck) within a niche (information technology) within a niche (metro Detroit), that’s not too bad, we think.

Especially since we keep kicking people out from time to time.

So yay us, and yay you for being a part of our group.  We’ve certainly come a long way over the last few years in particular.

And you get chatty sometimes.  Here are a few discussions going on in the group right now:

– How to get a job after 50: http://lnkd.in/vn4WjN

– About that 4,000 member milestone: http://lnkd.in/mCzBiz

– Sick time, personal leave, and “wellness bonuses”: http://lnkd.in/3MizR9

– An article about ArdentCause: http://lnkd.in/a_9mmC

– The H1B debate, which will shortly be turned into an article here for you to nag your congressional and house representatives with: http://lnkd.in/UV3sQh

Which then leads to the jobs posted in our group by recruiters that hang out in there and at our events (reminder, like the one taking place tonight: https://itinthed.com/event/february-casual-networking-social-2012/ ), which you can find at http://www.linkedin.com/groups?careerDiscussion=&gid=91763
