Casual Networking Event for Metro Detroit IT Professionals Tomorrow Night, Updates for 9/19/2012

Well, the cold and rainy days are here, which means that Fall is officially on the way.

Usually that signifies the start of my favorite thing each year – hockey season.  But not this year…sigh.  The year that the NHL has the Winter Classic in Detroit and the All Star Game right down the road in Columbus…sure, let’s screwup this year.

So while millionaires and billionaires bicker over who gets what percentage of jersey sales, let’s focus on things like our casual networking event for information technology professionals tomorrow night, as well as some other events you might want to check out…

As always, we start off with our upcoming event.

Tomorrow night, September 20th. Back to the familiar and comfortable spot of the back room of the BlackFinn in Royal Oak. 5:01pm start time like always. And still no sales pitches, no agendas, no speeches, no cover charges, no anything other than good, solid connection building and conversations with some of the best people you’ll find here in the metro Detroit area information technology industry.

Details are available on our site: http://www.ITinTheD.com/meet/ or on LinkedIn http://linkd.in/P0pRyr, Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/ITintheD), Meetup (http://meetup.ITinTheD.org), or any of our other “presence” pages or event listings around the web.

Should be a good time, looking forward to seeing you there.

While you’re coming, if you have a chance to help out some school kids, that would be great. A note from Steve Gaura, one of the recruiters who’s basically always been around with us and has done a lot of good for people:

Megan is a 3rd Grade Teacher at Brewster Elementary in Rochester Hills and she uses iPods for her Daily Five (Guided Reading and Books on Tape). Her goal is to have 10 iPods that she could share amongst her students. Don’t worry about headphones or even deleting the music you have on it, she can handle that no problem.

I will be more than happy to collect them at one of our events or even meet up for a beer between events to pick them up.

So if you can help out, that’s awesome, please hook up with Steve.

We’ve done a couple things with The Pink Fund over the years, and it’s time to fire up your clicking fingers to help them out.  They’re in the running for $250,000 …and that can help an awful lot of cancer survivors.  You can vote for them in Chase’s contest on Facebook by clicking here: https://fb.chasegiving.com/charity/view/ein/45-0544575?ref=web_canvas&fb_action_ids=10151161594723139&fb_action_types=og.likes&fb_source=aggregation&fb_aggregation_id=288381481237582

The first “guest blogger” post we ever had on ITintheD.com bubbled up the other day, and it still has a lot of truth to it.  Before you go freaking out all over a recruiter, you might want to read The Recruiter Strikes Back over at http://www.ITinTheD.com/73/the-recruiter-strikes-back/

If you’re in the downtown area tonight, you might want to check out the Refresh Detroit meeting taking place over at the Blue Cross/Blue Shield office.  Details can be found at http://refreshdetroit.org/2012/08/21/september-event-special-guest-speaker-brad-colbow/

If you’re not downtown, but you’re in Southfield and happen to be in the .Net world, you should probably check out the MIGANG event at the Microsoft office.  Details are at http://migang.org/

But we still expect to see you tomorrow night as well – http://www.ITinTheD.com/meet/

BRAND camp. Brand.

Then there was this one time…at brand camp …wait, what?  Sorry, that gets stuck in my head every year.  Brand Camp 2012 is coming up in October, and early registration is available through this coming Monday, September 24th by clicking here: https://bcu12detroit.eventbrite.com

Speaking of movie references…they seem to always pop up in conversations in our LinkedIn group.

Right now, here are a few of the topics being discussed:

– A heartwarming tale of a geek being reunited wtih a stolen laptop through the power of technology: http://lnkd.in/J665Wh

– Remember when there was a collective snort of derision whenever anyone mentioned “javascript” as “a programming language”.  Well those days are gone: http://lnkd.in/kD7PuC

– A decent event taking place in October over in Ann Arbor looking for recruiters and folks to attend: http://lnkd.in/CTjhrj

Jobs?  Oh, of course there are jobs getting discussed in our Career Discussions area: http://www.linkedin.com/groups?careerDiscussion=&gid=91763.  Here’s a few of what’s in there at the moment:

…and that’s just a bit of what’s out there.  If you’re looking, our LinkedIn group is a great place to start, but our events are where you’ll actually get face time with the recruiters looking to hire people, so that’s where you’ll want to be tomorrow night.

Oh, and don’t think I’ve forgotten about the long-since-derailed debacle with the downtown pub crawl.  Well, I kind of have forgotten about it now since I actually managed to pull one together and it was friggin’ awesome.  Well, unless you were a certain someone who wound up with alcohol-infused whip cream in her hair because some jokes are way funnier in one’s head than in actual implementation…

…but I digress.

Keep an eye over on The Detroit Funnies site – http://www.thedetroitfunnies.com/ – if you’re at all intrigued by the concept of bar hopping with some lunatics on a bus with handrails across the top of the bus that certain women after certain levels of alcohol are consumed begin to do gymnastic maneuv…

…I’m wandering again.  I know.  Sorry.  Anyway, I’m probably going to be involved with doing that on a monthly basis now, and if you’re interested, it’d be cool to have you come explore some fun bars and have a blast in a non-ITintheD.com setting.  I promised you a few updates ago that we were going to be doing some non-ITintheD.com fun stuff from time to time and that we’d clue you in.  Consider yourself clued.

Well, I think that’s about it for this time around. See you – http://www.ITinTheD.com/meet/ – tomorrow night!  And if you’re in the mood, after our event wraps up at the Blackfinn, The Detroit Funnies has an Open Mic night taking place at The Detroit Pub (14 and Harper, Clinton Township).  Should be a good time, and that’s where a few of us will be heading for some laughs and chill time.

Regards,

Bob, Dave and Jeff
