Getting Casual Again: News, Jobs and Updates for 6/28/2012

With a forecasted record high of 98 degrees plus sweltering humidity…

…good thing our Pink Slip Party was last week, huh?

Originally, I wasn’t going to do one of these this week – thought it’d be nice to just take a break after the Pink Slip Party last week and let things settle back down to normal…

…but it turns out that there are a few things worth mentioning, and we’ll probably take next week off given the holiday…so here we are again.  There are a couple of upcoming events you might be interested in hitting, a new Don’t Be That Guy went live, and sorts of other fun stuff is going on.

So let’s get those covered, and then go hide somewhere that has the air conditioning cranked up to “meat locker” status…

Thankfully, our Pink Slip Party was last week.

If you’d like to read a recap of the night, you can check that out over herehttp://www.ITinTheD.com/3800/june-psp-recap/ – and there are some photos from the evening posted out herehttp://www.ITinTheD.com/3802/photos-june-2012-pink-slip-party/

Again, a huge thank you to everyone that made it out, and made the event so successful.  I’ve already been clued in to two hires and about a dozen more interviews that have already taken place just in the past week from that night, and so really couldn’t be happier with the results.

We did have one…interesting…moment at the Pink Slip Party last week, which led to Don’t Be That Guy: The Walking Dead going live over at http://www.ITinTheD.com/3840/the-walking-dead/

Now we’re getting back to our casual networking events.  Same group, same great people, just in a more relaxed atmosphere and designed to foster connections between people in the industry rather than being so specifically jobs-focused.  Not that people don’t make connections that result in hires and new jobs at our casual events, but we’re just a little more laid back about things and not quite focused on it.

Our next event will be Thursday, July 19th, and it will be taking place at Clubhouse BFD in Rochester Hills.  Same 5:01pm start time, just in a new venue as we continue our efforts to get our events spread around the area in response to feedback from folks in our group all around Southeast Michigan.

You can catch the details on our events page: http://www.ITinTheD.com/meet/ or on LinkedIn at http://linkd.in/Hiu5nN if you’d like to RSVP ahead of time.  Which would be nice, because that worked out well for us to have a better sense of who’s coming.

From the “playing a little catch up” department, you can check out the videos that were shot at our event at the Blackfinn in March over herehttp://www.ITinTheD.com/3776/pep-talk-videos-about-networking/.  We’ve also started to make a little headway with our other events, sites and ideas that we’ve been playing with and mentioned over at http://www.ITinTheD.com/3749/upcoming-events-sites/ a bit ago.  If you’d like to start catching the eye of the aggregator that we’ve got running, throw a hashtag of #ITinTheD in your twitter posts, and they’ll start getting noticed by what’s running over at http://www.ITinTheD.com

Oh, and yes, we know there are people out there trying to run with that name.  We really don’t care. 🙂  Been playing around with it and had the URLs for more than a year now while we figured out what to do with them…and this is what we’re doing with them.

From our LinkedIn group, there are a few conversations going on that you might want to check out:

It still doesn’t make sense to me why there’s so much animosity between the city and the suburbs, and so maybe you can hop in here – http://lnkd.in/XiCUEN.

With the 4th of July rapidly approaching, and fireworks sales now legal in the state, many cities are scrambling to ban them just as quickly ahead of the holiday, and that’s being discussed over at http://lnkd.in/cG5jXr.

Recruiters…how helpful would it be to get some constructive feedback on the positions you post?  Is that something worthwhile?  Chime in at http://lnkd.in/iWDG4f

We think we’ve come up with a way to help improve communication at our events, but would like your thoughts on the matter.  So hit http://lnkd.in/TQ9pxW and let us know what you think.

Social Media Day Detroit 2012 is this Saturday.  If you haven’t already gotten your tickets…well, you’re kind of hosed and need to hop on the waitlist over at http://smdaydet2012-es2.eventbrite.com/

There are two other events coming up – a concert to support the troops, and an IT-focused career fair by the folks at Mercedes-Benz Financial Services that you may have spoken with at our event last week.  You can find details on both of those events here: http://www.ITinTheD.com/3864/two-events-you-might-be-interested-in/

As always, there are plenty of gigs posted by recruiters who participate in our group and at our events, and you can check those out here: http://www.linkedin.com/groups?careerDiscussion=&gid=91763

…and with all of that now out there…time to go hide in that air conditioned cave.

Stay cool, folks.

Regards,

Bob, Dave and Jeff
