Coming Tomorrow Night? Plus Jobs, Updates and More for 2/15/2012

There’s an awful lot going on these days.

We have our event tomorrow (that’s Thursday, for those of you keeping score at home) night up at Rochester Mills in Rochester Hills.  A few blog entries went live.  Bob utterly failed on Star Wars night at the Pistons game last Friday.  I got asked to be a moderator for a panel discussion on using social media to find a job…

…yes, I’ll just let that one marinate for a moment.

Me.  Moderator.  Panel discussion.

Trust me, Bob and Jeff are both already planning on multiple video cameras being present…and Jeff’s frantically scouring the internet for a high enough voltage shock collar that they can slip on me after a few pre-event drinks that night…

…but I’ll get more into that event, oh, probably Friday in our LinkedIn group and in next week’s updates here on the site.  I don’t want to distract too much from our event tomorrow night just yet.

Speaking of which, let’s go ahead and get those details out there, shall we?

Rochester Mills.  Rochester Hills.  5:01pm start time.  Walk in, head towards the bar…walk past the bar (I know, that’ll be hard…you can stop and grab something on your way past it if you really need to), and there we’ll be.  Nice big and open area, tables, some comfy chairs, all part of the “experimenting with someplace new” process.  Really looking forward to it.  Rumor has it that we might even have a few pool tables set aside for us.

Details can be found on our site at http://www.ITinTheD.com/meet/ or on LinkedIn at http://linkd.in/soDfC9

As always – no cover charges.  No sales pitches.  No agendas.  No…well, no anything, really, other than meeting, drinks and chatting with some of the coolest folks in the IT industry here in metro Detroit that don’t suck – our members.

Okay, well, most of them don’t suck.  We just found one that had never seen a single Star Wars film.  He’s been locked in a janitor’s closet with a DVD player, all six films, and a bucket in the corner until he can recite at least three “key” lines from each movie.

And speaking of things that don’t suck, late last week we put out a two-parter on How Not To Suck At Interviewing For A Job.  Part 1 covers the preparation and “getting ready” process taking you up through the night before your interview and can be found here: http://www.ITinTheD.com/3078/how-not-to-suck-at-interviewing-for-a-job-part-i/

Part 2 then dives into what you should be doing on the day of your interview, at the interview, and after the interview, and that can be found here: http://www.ITinTheD.com/3086/how-not-to-suck-at-interviewing-for-a-job-part-ii/

Now, before you have to go worrying about preparing for an interview, you have to find a job you’re interested in, right?

Right.

So before we continue on with this week’s updates, let’s go ahead take a look at some of the jobs that are sitting in our LinkedIn group right now.  After that, then we’ll go ahead and continue with some more updates for other groups, other events, and other miscellaneous things we thought you might want to know about.

Great Opportunity for Senior QA’s. Please feel free to pass along!
Job: Senior QA Analyst in Bingham Farms, MI Title: Senior QA Tester Location: Bingham Farms, MI Term: Long-Term Contract (with possibility of going direct) Start Date:

Phew.  I think that’s enough for now.  As I’m sure you’re aware (and if not, you should be), it’s almost inevitable that more will get posted through the time leading up to our event tomorrow night.  And since the questions came up twice this past week:

No, it doesn’t cost you anything to post jobs in our group

Yes, we try and keep up with what’s been posted since our last update and make sure they get included in the upcoming updates.

No, it still doesn’t cost you anything.

Yes, we can show you how to get your jobs posted.  Go here: http://www.ITinTheD.com/1153/how-to-post-jobs-with-ITintheD-org/ and read.

Now, if you’re looking for something to do today while you’re waiting for our event tomorrow night, you might want to check out:

– During the day today, you can check out the MIVirtualCareerFair, sort of a virtual job fair of sorts, from what I understand.  In fact, if someone has the time to check it out and let us know how it is, if it’s useful, etc., that would be most appreciated.

– Tonight, the MIGANG event takes place with a focus on Powershell.  Good group of folks, .NET focused, and some of them even like beer.

Still reading?  That other event that I’ll start talking about on Friday…the one where I’m almost assuredly going to say or do something stupid…that’s during the evening on March 1st.  Keep on eye here on the site and in the LinkedIn group, because there are other events and things taking place this weekend and in the near future that I’m saving for now so that I have more than the usual “Hey…that event last night was pretty cool, huh?” to say on Friday.

That’s the news, and I…am…outta here!

See you tomorrow night – http://www.ITinTheD.com/meet/ – at Rochester Mills in Rochester Hills.  Or not.  If, you know, you’re That Guy.

Regards,

Bob, Dave and Jeff
