Event Next Week, Jobs, Learn To Code, And So Much More – Updates for 1/11/2012

…and a contest to win lunch with Governor Snyder.  And an iPad2, some career counseling, some training, and all sorts of other good stuff.

Oh, and want to be a Detroit Red Wing for a day?  There’s a contest for that, too.  You know, now that the Lions are all done, the Pistons are sucking, baseball is still months away and so people will actually pay attention to the Red Wings for a while before Hockeytown Fever hits with the playoffs and suddenly everyone pretends to know what boarding is.

Then we’ve got a little mini-rant in conjunction with our event next Thursday night at the BlackFinn in Royal Oak, a whole mess of jobs and chatter in the LinkedIn group, we asked for feedback about our Pink Slip Party events, and then we started to get some which led to an open response to some of it sitting over here, we told you about a couple ways to pick up some coding skills on the cheap…or even free

Whew.  You’d think we were getting paid to do all of this or something…oh wait, some of you confused us with other people that actually do try to make money off of you.

Yeah, it’s been a fun week.  So let’s go ahead and get started…

First thing’s first.  Like I said, there’s a little mini-rant sitting out at http://www.ITinTheD.com/2950/our-next-event/ as well as a reminder that our next casual networking event takes place next week.  Thursday, January 19th.  BlackFinn.  Back room.  5:01 start time.  Totally free of charge to attend.

Speaking of events, do remember that you can always catch the details on all of our events out on…umm, well, duh…our Events page here on the site out at http://www.ITinTheD.com/meet/  We’ve got next week, as well as February, March, April and May booked and ready to go.

Now, on that same topic…if you’ve never come to one of our events before, you might want to read this exchange over here at http://www.ITinTheD.com/2952/an-open-response-to-a-note-about-our-events/, since that basically walks through one person’s experience as it relates to showing up at one of our Pink Slip Party events, feeling a little overwhelmed, and then some hints, tips and discussion about how to best handle walking in for the first time, and how to make the most of it in general.

Actually, even if you have come to one of our events before, you probably ought to read that.  In fact, especially if you’ve only been to only one of our events and felt a bit overwhelmed…it’s a really good read, because it talks about the change between the first and second event someone came to, and how things have gotten better.

That feedback came about as a result of this post over here at http://www.ITinTheD.com/2924/psp-tweak/ where we asked for feedback about our Pink Slip Party events…and we still want more, so hop over there and chime in either with our Contact Us page, or in the LinkedIn group, or come bend our ear at next week’s event…whatever works.

Let’s see…what’s up next.  Oh yeah, teaching you how to code.

There are two pretty cool initiatives going on, Shifting Code (an offshoot of the Shifting Gears program that you’ve likely read about from us before) and CodeYear.  You can read about both over here at http://www.ITinTheD.com/2947/learn-how-to-code-gov-snyder/ if you’re so inclined.

That same page has the information about the contest to win a lunch with Governor Snyder, as well as the iPad2, career training, and all of the other stuff that you will, of course, pretend to want far less than lunch with a politician if you win.

And then that other contest if you want to be an honorary Detroit Red Wing for a day over at http://redwings.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=76431

Which brings us to our LinkedIn group.  You’ll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy…oops, sorry.  Yeah, there might have been a chat about Star Wars that took place in there this week.  Well, actually…it wasn’t so much a chat “about” Star Wars as much as it was a chat about an article covering a “Geek Bucket List” for 2012 with a bunch of release dates and events taking place…and, ummm, well, yeah, we’re geeks.  We started talking about Star Wars.  It happens.

But that’s still a pretty cool topic going on.  As are the chats about the technology from The Minority Report coming to your Windows platform systems via Kinect in February, FCC and their control over the airwaves, spammers, SOPA, and all sorts of other fun stuff.  So hop on over to http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=91763 and dive in.  It’s nowhere nearly as much fun as having those conversations in person at our events…but, well, you do what you can when you can, right?  Right.

On the topic of “do”…you know that thing you do more than just about anything else in your life?  Yeah, “work”.  Well, there are plenty of jobs from recruiters that participate in our group sitting out there as well.  You can get right to the Job Discussions (yes, LinkedIn changed the name…again…sigh…) via this link – http://www.linkedin.com/groups?careerDiscussion=&gid=91763 – or simply by logging into LinkedIn, hitting our group, then hit the “jobs” link in our group’s navigation, and then hit “Job Discussions” on the left-hand side once you’re in Jobs.

Yeah…I’d just try to use the link if I were you.  They keep making it more and more convoluted.

We’ve had quite a few new recruiters join the group over the past month or so, and they’re starting to dive in and post jobs.  Hopefully they’ll pay attention when we keep telling them that it’s a two-way street…they’re going to need to be showing up at our events just like you do in order to build those connections and be more than some random words in a post in the group.  But, speaking of posting…here’s a bit of what’s out there at the moment:
