Something Old, Something New…News, Jobs and Updates for 10/5/2011

0

The Lions are now four wins and no losses on the season.  The Red Wings kick off the regular season in a matter of days.  The Tigers are in the post-season battling the mighty Yankees.  Basketball…well, you can’t have everything, right?

Like us.  We don’t have everything, but we do have a bunch of stuff that you might be interested in.  We’ve got something old (another Don’t Be That Guy entry), something new (the first How Not To Suck post), something…hmmm…we don’t have something borrowed.  We have something blue, and that’s that we’re a little sad we had to kill off the event originally scheduled for tomorrow night (10/6) at the BlackFinn and the Party Bus Tour due to scheduling conflicts on a number of different fronts.

So, no event tomorrow night, but we still have our event coming up on the 20th, as well as the usual assortment of conversations taking place in the LinkedIn group, jobs floating around out there as well, and all sorts of the usual fun and nonsense.  So let’s get started with the event on the 20th…

Our next casual networking event takes place on Thursday, October 20th at the Dragonmead Brewery in Warren.  It’s a very cool location…and not just because they have a lot of great beer.  But let’s be honest, that helps.  You can find details on our site at http://www.ITinTheD.com/event/october-casual-networking-social-networking-for-it-professionals-in-metro-detroit/ (wow…I really have to get better about editing permalinks to be shorter…) or out on LinkedIn at http://events.linkedin.com/October-Casual-Networking-Social/pub/756552  Check it out, give it a look, and we’ll see you there.

Don’t Be That Guy – The Booty Call Networker went live at http://www.ITinTheD.com/2415/dont-be-that-guy-the-booty-call-networker/ …and interestingly enough, a decent amount of feedback has come in that this one has some good rules to live by outside of one’s professional life as well.  Always good to know people actually read these things.

Next up, we launched a new set of entries, aptly titled “How Not To Suck”, with How Not To Suck at Networking out at http://www.ITinTheD.com/2403/how-not-to-suck-at-networking/. Our Don’t Be That Guy entries are great and all (and we hope you enjoy reading them as much as we do writing them), but not everything we want to write fits into the “Don’t Be That Guy” mold. Sometimes it’s just about offering some feedback, hints, tips and tricks on how not to suck…or at least suck less.  So, there you have it.  Entry #1.  Go read it and let us know what you think.

Then we’ve got our LinkedIn group.  You’ll never find a more wretched hive of scum and vill…sorry.  I’ve still got Star Wars on the brain after reading through all the jokes and rants about the Blu-Ray re-re-re-Re-RE-release (example: in the Blu-Ray version, Alderaan shoots first) of the films.

So what’s going on in there these days?  Well, we had someone post a forwarded chain email as fact, which led to a fun discussion of why you should never…EVER…do that.  I mean, honestly…who does that to a group full of geeks?  It’s bad enough dealing with our own relatives who don’t know any better…but in our group?  Really now.  We’ve also got discussions of Droid Tablets vs the iPad and even topics as deep as global trade imbalances, tariffs and outsourcing.  So get thee to the group and chime in.

Jobs?  Yep, got those too if you’re in the market.  Have a look at some of what’s out there currently…and, as always, there’s more sitting in the group both in regards to other gigs as well as further details about these…
