ITintheD.org Updates, News, Don’t Be That Guy and More for July 6, 2011

Wow, this latest episode of Law and Order really has everyone all frothed up, huh?  Ah, don’t worry – we promise this to be the one message you’ll get today that has absolutely nothing to do with Casey Anthony, OJ Simpson, or even trial versions of software…because yeah, we’re that sick of it all, too.

We’re two weeks out from our next event over at the BlackFinn, we’ve got yet another Don’t Be That Guy that’s gone live (don’t blame us, it’s not our fault people keep forcing us to write these…), there are some fun discussions taking place in our LinkedIn group, and of course there are jobs out there as well.

So, let’s get rolling with the updates and see where we land…

July’s networking event will take place on Thursday the 21st, and will be back at the familiar stomping grounds of the back room at the BlackFinn in Royal Oak. As always, you can find the particulars out on our Events page at http://www.ITinTheD.com/meet/ or on LinkedIn at http://events.linkedin.com/ITintheD-org-July-Happy-Hour/pub/675394.

August 18th is the date for our first networking event out at Penny Black in Rochester. As with July’s event, you can find the details on our Events page http://www.ITinTheD.com/meet/ or out on LinkedIn at http://events.linkedin.com/ITintheD-org-August-Happy-Hour/pub/707335

Don’t Be That Guy – More Human Than Human has gone live out at http://www.ITinTheD.com/2004/dont-be-that-guy-more-human-than-human/, and like I said earlier…don’t blame us that we keep writing these.  Trust us, we’d be ecstatic if we never felt compelled to write one again…but, as long as That Guy lives and walks among us, we have a duty…no, an obligation…to keep going.  Plus it makes us laugh.  And it keeps our trips to a therapist office down to a minimum by having an outlet like these are.

Speaking of outlets…how many times have you just wanted to smash someone in the face during a meeting, or at least tripped them up as you were walking by them in the hallway after that jerk move during yesterday’s meeting?  Yeah, you’re not fooling anyone…you know you’ve been there.  Why am I bringing this up?  Because the person we’re throwing into the spotlight this week is involved with Roller Derby.  Yes – roller derby!  How friggin’ cool is that?!  I mean, sure, she’s artsy and creative with the pretty front-end stuff too, but…seriously…roller derby, people!  Misty Mills bills herself as a Creative designer / Adobe User Group Manager and can be found on LinkedIn by clicking here.  Here’s what she has to say about herself:

Summary
My interests and goals are varied, as is my background. I enjoy acting and screenplay writing. I also have several years of experience as a graphic designer and as a web designer with a focus on the user experience. I also have a lot of print experience.

I co-founded and organize the biennial Michigan Flash Festival. I run the Adobe User Group for Ann Arbor, Michigan, and I teach Flash at University of Michigan. However, Flash is not my main focus of the Adobe suite. Photoshop is! I’m a big fan of Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, Acrobat and Dreamweaver, though I use other applications as well.

Outside of work, I’m also a musician, an Ann Arbor Derby Dime (roller derby league), a jamskating judge, a folk artist (Pysanky eggs) and all around creative. This bleeds from my personal life to my professional life and can be seen in many aspects of what I do and how I do it.

Specialties
Using and instructing in Adobe Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver, branding and identity, print design, usability and user interface

…and in case you missed it – roller derby, people!  How can you not want someone around that’s involved with friggin’ roller derby?!?!  Go check her out at http://www.linkedin.com/in/mistymills and get her landed somewhere…she even comes equipped with her own elbow pads!

(oh, and if you want to be included in one of these…drop me a note.  I want to make sure I don’t accidentally put someone out here that doesn’t necessarily want to be…)

Elsewhere out in LinkedIn land, we’re sharing stories of amusing and horrific ways we’ve seen people get let go or quit jobs before.  It’s…truly amazing, really…how creative some people can get, and how weird or cold some companies can be.  There’s also a chat taking place about people faking work experience, and a few other interesting topics…so hop in and see what’s going on.

And, of course, the other thing that’s going on in the group is jobs being posted.  Here’s a sampling of what’s out there currently:
