Opening Up A Bit, Downtime, June event, and Some Jobs – Updates for 5/26/2011

As always, a huge “thank you” to everyone that came out to the BlackFinn last week.  Another great event, and we’re seeing a lot of new faces…usually accompanied by some familiar ones, which is the way this is supposed to work, after all.  We’re not supposed to be the Skull and Bones society…it’s okay to tell people about us, and invite them along for the ride!

This week, we’ve got some updates about our LinkedIn group and the things you need to know now that we’ve changed it to the “open group” format, our websites going to drop offline sometime over the long weekend for a few hours so that we can break…uh “improve” things a bit, we’ve scheduled our June event, there are jobs…and again, with the glory that is LinkedIn, you have a few more clicks to get to them.

So, here we go…

You know the rules – first things first, our shameless self-promotion.  Our next event will be at the Red Ox Tavern in Utica (yes, we’re going back to Utica…and yes, we all made “Going Back To Cali” jokes) on June 16th.  As always, we’ll have a 5:01pm start time, and it’ll go until they throw us out.  You can find details on the event:

On our site: http://www.ITinTheD.com/event/juneredox/

On LinkedIn: http://events.linkedin.com/ITintheD-org-June-Happy-Hour/pub/675164

We also have it listed out on Eventful, Eventbrite and a few other places…but just as a note (since there seems to be some confusion)…you don’t actually have to grab tickets from Eventbrite to come to our events.  Seriously.  We just list our events out there because…well, because we’re still experimenting, that’s why.  If and when you actually do ever have to grab tickets there, we’ll let you know, we promise.

Now…some downtime.  I’m going to be taking the site offline sometime over the long weekend (and, honestly, if you can’t live without us for a few hours over a holiday weekend…we’re flattered, but go grill something and grab a beer) so that we can run a few conversions, make some upgrades, install some new toys, and just generally completely screw things up for a while.  To be candid, the new toys probably won’t be “live” until sometime somewhere in June-ish…we’re just getting the basics put together and getting them ready for us to start tweaking.  No, I’m not going to expound any further on what they are.  Yes, I realize that’s crappy of me.  Yes, you’re just going to have to wait and see what we’ve got brewing.

So about our LinkedIn group.  We’ve changed over to the “open group” format, which means a few things:

  1. It means that our group is now “open” to the internet for any new conversations, jobs, etc., that get posted.  We think this is a good thing, as it will help people find us, see us, and learn more about the group and what we’re doing.
  2. It is not totally open.  Random dbags from around the internet cannot stop by and troll.  Guests have no ability to post anything.  They must still “join” the group, and go through our usual review process (read: “one of us checks out their profile, maybe sends them an email if they look questionable, and either approve or decline them”) before they can do any of that.  And then, even when they do join, anything they post will be moderated and have to be approved by one of us before it goes live.  Why?  Because we like people, but we’re also realistic about them as well.
  3. Everything in the group before the day we went “open”, Tuesday, is in a members-only archive.  So if you’re already a member, you can read it.  Random guests from around the internet cannot.  We’re leaving things in your hands as to whether or not you want your prior postings resurrected (ha ha, “they got Raptured”) for the new, wider audience, then you can choose to do so on your own.  How?  Like that graphic up there on the right.
  4. The same goes for jobs as well.
  5. Speaking of jobs…when you go into the Jobs area of our group, you’ll notice a lot are missing.  They’re not missing.  They’re just archived.  To get to them (and you won’t have to do this for anything newly posted from here on out), follow these steps:
Make sure you're in our group
Head into "Career Discussions"…
Hit the archive down at the bottom

Again, you won’t have to go through those headaches for anything posted since we went “open” on Tuesday, and you won’t have to do it for anything posted in the future…but there’s a lot sitting in there right now to look through, so don’t miss it if you’re currently hunting down a gig.  Based on my testing, you may have to click “Go to Archive” down in the bottom right two or three times to actually get to it.  Trust me, they’re there.  For instance…
