The Flint Water Crisis Tonight, Networking Event Next Week and More for 2/8/2016

Tonight’s going to be a little challenging for us as we hit episode 130 of our weekly live podcast.  We’re getting a little outside of our comfort zone as we tackle a heavier topic than we normally do, but it’s an important one with a lot of ripple effect impact throughout the metro Detroit area, and so we hope you’ll join us.  Assuming we make it through that, we’ve got our casual networking event next Thursday night, a couple blog entries for you to read, two new areas of our site (Watch and Deals) that we’re trying out and more…

EventNewspaper_Feb2016Like we usually do, we start with our next upcoming in-person event.  After a great kickoff to 2016 at Firebird Tavern, we’re heading over to Hamlin Corner in Royal Oak for our February Casual Networking Social next Thursday, February 18th.

As always…no cover charges, no agendas, no speakers, no anything other than good, solid networking possibilities with some of the best and brightest folks in and around the information technology community here in metro Detroit.

We have all of our events already scheduled and published out for the whole year of 2016, so you have no excuses about not knowing when or where our events are.  Mark your calendars now.

EventNewspaper_MarPSP2016That also means that we’re just around the corner from the first of two Pink Slip Party events taking place this year.

On Thursday, March 10, 2016, we’ll return to The Majestic Theater for one of our larger, more jobs-focused events.  As with previous years, we’ll have a limited number of tables available for a few companies who want to have a larger presence at the event.  Check out our Sponsors page – https://itinthed.com/sponsors/ – for details, and then drop us a note – https://itinthed.com/contact-us/

Details can be found here on the site – https://itinthed.com/meet/, on our Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/ITinTheD, or in our Meetup group – http://www.meetup.com/ITintheD/

We’ve launched two new tabs on our site.  WATCH is where we’re going to keep the various videos that we do, or are about us, including the ones we’re doing before each podcast episode.  That can be found at https://itinthed.com/watch/.  DEALS is where we’re going to keep track of the various special offers that come in for our listeners and readers, and can be found at https://itinthed.com/deals/.  We’ve also embedded similar information in our Podcast Detroit app, but more on that in a moment.

12631414_659900797485763_6460439362834222894_nNaturally, we’ll be talking a bit about that during the first segment of tonight’s broadcast of episode 130 of our weekly live podcast, but then we’ll be diving into what’s been going on in Flint lately, and we’re not doing it by just sitting back and pontificating on the issue…we’re lucky enough to be joined tonight by a number of people who are in the depths of the trenches on this day to day, and we’re very much looking forward to the conversations.

The water crisis in Flint is something we’re all familiar with by this point, but we’ve got some amazing guests joining us tonight to tell us what it looks like in the midst of everything that’s going on.  Repeat guest Russ Dotson has been living in Flint since his return, and just closed on a new house a month before all of this broke.  With his assistance, we’re also being joined by Kathi Horton, President of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, and Dr Mona Hanna-Attisha MD MPH FAAP, the founder of www.FlintKids.org and who you may recognize from the story CNN did – http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/21/health/flint-water-mona-hanna-attish/, as well as Dr. Martin Kaufman http://www.umflint.edu/ers/martin-m-kaufman from the University of Michigan. He’s an expert in all things urban water, and is leading the GIS mapping project trying to identify all the lead service lines in Genesee county.  Also joining us will be lifelong Flint resident and social activist, Rob Kanous.

Needless to say, it’s going to be a very informative episode with a lot of good insight into how the situation happened, what’s going on right now, how you can best get involved to help, and what the future looks like.

Mics go live at 9pm like always, so join us by listening live from 9pm to 11pm, and then hit us up by firing up Twitter and hitting @ITintheD during the show…and our phone line is up and operational as well.  We love audience participation, so come along and play with us!

PD_mic_Twitter_500x500Listen live to hear it all happen…and as mentioned up above, you’d do well to grab the Podcast Detroit app for Android or iOS and listen that way.  You can find those apps here: http://www.podcastdetroit.com/how-to-listen/  The app was just recently updated to make finding out information about new shows, as well as catching show archives, a lot easier. The Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association joins our roster of shows this week as well, so hit the site and check out all of the great shows, check the schedule to see when to catch them live, and get caught up on their past episodes as well.
