Episode 101 Tonight: Startup Weekend, 800LawnGuru, Events, Pink Slip Party Announcement and More for 7/20/2015

We’ve got episode 101 of our weekly live podcast tonight, and as usual we’ve got some fun guests doing cool stuff in the area.  Our next Pink Slip Party event has been booked, we’ve got an announcement about other upcoming events, there are some blog entries for you to read as well as the usual fun on our Facebook page and Twitter stream, we did a live broadcast that you’re going to want to listen to…

As always, let’s kick things off with information about our next event.

HopCat Detroit_Live VenueWe’re going to slow things down a bit.  Running two events per month is simply exhausting, and we’ve heard from people that it’s just too much.  So, we’re going to go back to our one event per month Third Thursday rotation.

On Thursday, August 20th we’ll be upstairs in the Huma Room at Hopcat at our usual starting time of 5pm.  You’ve heard the rumors, you may have even been there already – Hopcat’s a great place with a huge selection of beers as well as a full bar for those not in a beer mood.

EventNewspaper_august2015bNo cover charge to get in, no sales pitches, no agendas, no nonsense.  Just good, solid opportunities to get to know some of the best and brightest folks in the metro Detroit information technology community.  Looking forward to seeing you there.

Details can be found here on the site – https://itinthed.com/meet/, on our Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/ITinTheD, or in our Meetup group – http://www.meetup.com/ITintheD/

EventNewspaper_septPSP2015bAfter that comes September, which means it’s time for one of our Pink Slip Party events.

And so on Thursday, September 17th, we’re back at The Majestic Theater for yet another one of our (in)famous Pink Slip Parties.  If you’re not familiar with our Pink Slip Party events, then you should probably learn why they’re different from our casual networking events by reading the frequently asked questions over at https://itinthed.com/faq/, and you can check out some photos over at https://itinthed.com/meet/photos/.

DSC_0033Like all of our Pink Slip Party events, we’ll be accepting a very limited set of sponsors to help us offset the costs of running the event who get to have an established physical presence at the event, appear on all of our marketing materials and media mentions.  Check out our sponsors page at https://itinthed.com/sponsors/ and then drop us a note to reserve a spot.

ITintheDnewspaper07202015bNaturally, we’ll be talking about all of that and more during tonight’s broadcast of our live weekly podcast.

Tonight we’re joined by our guests Scott Kloustin to talk about Startup Weekend and other initiatives, and the 800LawnGuru crew to tell you about an app that’ll summon people to mow your yard.

I don’t know about you, but after this recent heat wave, I’m really digging on the idea of someone else coming to work in my yard.

11753824_10207392945324261_339201012_nMics go live at 9pm like always, so join us by listening live from 9pm to 11pm, and then hit us up by firing up Twitter and hitting @ITintheD during the show.  We love audience participation, so come along and play with us!  Not sure how to listen live?  We’ve got instructions for you over here: https://itinthed.com/listen/how-to-listen/.  You can catch last week’s momentous episode 100 with a whole room filled to capacity with some of our favorite people at https://itinthed.com/17463/episode-100-falling-down-beer-company-city-of-detroit-k-hubb-and-her-corner/

FB_IMG_1437157323409We also did a live broadcast this past Friday from the Converge security conference.  Pretty damned cool conversations with a couple guys who know their way around a command line…as well as how to walk and talk their way into penetrating security around the world.  We also chatted with the organizer of a 501c3 setup to teach kids about security in a pretty cool way.

We were live for just over an hour, and you can check that out at https://itinthed.com/17488/live-broadcast-converge-2015-security-conference-7172015/

shockgOn the blogs front, a couple older entries bubbled up that still carry some very valuable advice and lessons.  Always Be Yourself tells you why it’s important to not try and juggle multiple personas in the context of my own experiences.  You can read that at https://itinthed.com/4040/always-be-yourself/

And we say harp on this next one constantly.

Never, ever forget what a small world it is, folks.  Detroit seems like a big place, with a lot of people in/around the IT industry, but it’s a very, very small world after all.  Read up on one of Bob’s encounters and experiences over at https://itinthed.com/6891/dont-be-that-guy-its-a-small-world-after-all/
