ITintheD.org Event Next Week – Updates and Jobs for 1/5/2011

Well, here we are.  2011.  Happy New Year, everyone!  By now, hopefully you’ve recovered from the overwhelming compulsion to pour bleach into your eyes after seeing the New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys live from Times Square…and really, who are they kidding?  “Kids”?  “Boys”?  Aren’t they all solidly in their 30’s and in some cases pushing (or past…) 40?  Who do they think they’re kidding?!

Anyway, we hope the new year finds you well, and we’re looking forward to seeing everyone next week at the BlackFinn in Royal Oak for our first casual networking event of the year on Thursday, January 13th.  As always, it will start at 5pm, and there are no cover charges, no admission fees, no sponsors, no speakers, no sales pitches, no room crammed full of people that have no relation to the IT industry whatsoever trying to sell you tupperware and health juice.  Nope, just some of the best and brightest in the metro Detroit IT industry getting together for some good, solid connection building and networking.

Sounds good, right?  Right.  Look forward to seeing you there!

We’re really looking forward to this year as things bounce around to new venues and new cities.  Even to seeing what happens with the Pink Slip Parties moving to every other month.  Well, we’re also a little nervous about it because it’s definitely outside of our normal “comfort zone”…but hey, this is what people said they wanted, and so we’re going to give it a shot and see what happens.  After all, that’s pretty much how we’ve always done things, and so we’ll do what we can to make sure things come off as well as we hope they will.

And so, let’s talk jobs for the first time this year.  All of the experts are predicting that things turn around this year.  Recruiters and hiring managers are seeing shorter interview periods coupled with (slowly) increasing bill rates and salaries.

Another good sign is that we’re starting to see a lot of new recruiters from new companies showing an interest in our group and our events.  Word is getting around that we’ve got some stellar talent that attends, and that there’s value to be had from the free events that those “don’t be that guy” guys put on.  We’ve gotten feedback that several serious companies around the area have flat out forbidden (or “strongly discouraged”) their people from taking part in any events that charge people to attend – a welcome ripple effect.  Honestly, like we’ve always said…there are plenty of groups and resources out there that do things for free that others want you to pay for.  Even if it’s not our events that you attend, or if we’re not the right fit for you, we hope you take advantage of any one or all of the events that believe the same as we do and aren’t looking to build an income stream from you during these already difficult times.

So what do we have going on in the LinkedIn group at the moment?  Here’s a quick sampling:

I’m actually kind of bummed that I missed that event last night – had every intention of going, but didn’t even get out of work until close to 6:00…and getting down to Ypsilanti from Farmington Hills just didn’t seem all that feasible at that point. I hope to make it to a future one, though!
