Updates and Jobs for 2/24/2011

Well, here we are at just about the end of February for 2011.  We’ve had our first casual networking event, and our first Pink Slip Party of the year has come and gone.  We’ve heard about roughly twenty interviews setup as a result of last Thursday’s event, and it sounds like at least one new hire could be happening from it as early as today (good luck, Chris!).  We’re heading into the next couple of months with an interesting schedule, including a few more trial-runs of ideas and concepts for our events as well as getting back to some safe and familiar comfortable ground.

So let’s take a look at what’s on deck for the coming weeks, as well as some jobs that are floating around currently…

March is going to be an intriguing month.  We’re doing two events in the same month for the first time, and we’re also trying our little experiment with “something fun”, so it’ll be interesting to see how it all works out.

The first event takes place on March 10th (that’s a Thursday), and is one of our casual networking events in the back room of the BlackFinn. The second takes place on March 23rd (that’s a Wednesday) in the Rooftop Room down at Hockeytown Cafe in downtown Detroit that takes place in conjunction with a Red Wings vs Vancouver Canucks game that night.

As with all of our events, both events will start at 5pm and are completely free of charge for all to attend.  Yep, it’s free if you’re a job seeker.  It’s free if you want to hire someone.  It’s free if you just want to show up and meet some other people in the IT industry to expand your network a bit.  It’s even free if you just want to tell your significant other that it’s really important for your career to be there and then just show up to hang out and watch the Wings game…we’re not here to judge.  We don’t want your money, we don’t want you to buy tokens before you can talk to someone, and we certainly don’t expect you to pay a cover charge to walk into a public establishment.  You’ll need to bring money to cover your own parking and drinks, and you already know that you had to buy your own tickets for the Red Wings game…I mean, we’re good guys and all, but there are limits.

For details on those two events, you can check out:

The LinkedIn group’s “next” function in the jobs tab is still jacked up.  The last update I have from them is from yesterday, indicating that yes, they’re aware of the issue and they’ve referred it to their developers to fix it.  Some of you might want to contact them to offer to take a look at it for them if you’ve got some free time…

As a result, make sure you have a look through the last few updates out at http://www.ITinTheD.com/category/news/ in order to make sure you’re not missing anything that might be of interest to you job-wise.  I only post things in here that are “new” since the last published update, but anything beyond the last couple of days will still be available in those updates.

Speaking of the LinkedIn group, there are a few interesting conversations going on in there currently that you may want to check out.  One is about an employer demanding an employee’s Facebook credentials in order to maintain their employment.  Another is about a topic that keeps raising its ugly head – the one page resume.  We’ve covered this one before with Bad Resume Guy (http://www.ITinTheD.com/101/bad-resume-guy/), but it keeps coming up as a topic because clueless people still keep giving the same bad advice.  So, check out those discussions and more while you’re there.

Now, as to what jobs we have in there currently…
